Tuesday Night Bible Studies

The Tuesday night bible studies that meet in Upper Chapter House at the Cathedral are having a re-shuffle. Mainly to fix up the numbers in the groups after Simply Christianity has finished. So, Tuesday night, we'll meet in our new groups - which have (or should have) been advised.

Dont forget dinner at 6:30, Bible study at 7pm.

30 Mar @ TBT

We looked at Colossians 2:6-23, and saw that in order to be right with God it is 100% Christ. There is nothing that can add to Christ, NOTHING. Not rules, not regulations, not laws, not the Old Testament shadows, not the old testament rituals, not the old testament festivals, nothing. Nothing should come between us and Christ, not angels, not people with puffed up visions about themselves, nothing.

We also saw that Christianity is not a relgion. All religions the world over are about what I have to do. Do this dont, do that. Do this, cant do that. But Christianity is about what Christ has done for us. The difference between Christianity and all world religions can be summed up in the phrase: do v. done. In religions, we have to do the doing. But in Christianity, it has been done for us. Done for us by Christ. Religions are about how I work my way up to heaven (or nirvana), Christianity is about how God came down to us as Jesus Christ to save us. Hence the Christian gospel (gospel means good news). It would not be good news if I had to do the doing. It is good news because it has been done for us ! Praise God.

Christianity is a faith because it has been done for us in Christ, and we have faith that he has done it. Our faith that he has done it means we dont even attempt to do it ourselves, otherwise we show we dont have faith that it has already been done.

Nothing But THE MYSTERY

Last night we continued our series Colossians, looking at Colossians 1:24 to 2:7

We were reminded that the mystery of the gospel, that the gentiles were included in salvation along with the Jews, had been revealed to us so that it was no longer a mystery. And that revelation is full and final, so we don't need to move beyond Jesus to the latest fad or fancy. Rather, we continue in Christ Jesus for it is in him alone that salvation is found.

We also learnt that rather than looking down on Paul because he suffered, that his suffering confirmed the genuineness of his faith. As Christians, we can expect to be persecuted and suffer. Indeed, in order to attack the message of Christianity, people will often try and tear down Christians themselves. Yet Paul struggles and is persecuted in order to encourage the Christians in Colossae and Laodicea, because he longs to present everyone perfect in Christ.

It was indeed awesome to be reminded that all we need to do is have faith in Christ, for it is in him alone that we have salvation. We need to keep Jesus as our number one priority as we continue to walk in him.

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Cathedral Easter Convention

Cathedral Easter Convention is approachign fast. It will be held at the Cathedral on Good Friday afternoon from 2-5pm. It's on Justification. Phillip Jensen & Ian Powell are speaking on the theology of Justification & Expounding Romans 3. Should be a great day.

If you are going to be in Sydney for Easter (and we ought to be), it is a great opportunity to spend the afternoon reflecting upon the significance of Jesus' death. Cost is $15 at the door ($10 concession). Plan on making a day of it. The Good Friday gathering is on at 10am at the Cathedral, so those of us from The Bible Talks that make it in will meet together afterwards (near the glass door at the entrance to the Upper Chapter House) and then head down to Chinatown for some lunch before coming back for the Convention at 2pm.

If you feel that you are not quite sure what the fundamentals of the Christian faith are, or would like a refresher, then this series is for you.

Just for Starters, (or 'The 7 Basic Bible Studies' as it is sometimes known) looks at what the Bible teaches on seven fundamental topics: Saved by God, Trusting in God, Living God's Way, Listening to God, Talking to God, Meeting with God's family, Meeting the World.

NOTHING BUT: Living worthily in Christ

Last night we began our series in Colossians, with our Pastor Mike Turner preaching his first sermon.

We saw that Colossians 2:6 summed up Paul's purpose in writing to them:
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

People were struck by:
* The gospel hallmarks of faith, hope and love
* Faith, hope and love – now and forever. The mark of the Christian.
* The opportunities we have to seek to serve one another!
* The need to ensure we are worthy Christians, living and walking in the gospel.
* Faith, hope and love are a gift from God – not works
* A great insight into the gospel deluxe and its sufficiency

May Paul's prayer for the Colossians indeed be our prayer for one another:

... that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
